Typical Fees for a Psychological Report

My reviewed (March 2024) hourly fee for Court Reports is £170. My estimate for a typical initial assessment report is between £1360 and £2160.This is estimated as follows:

  • Interview with the client – and wherever possible/relevant or available a family member / close relative (typically 2 hours)

  • Reviewing relevant medical/psychological records (between 2 and 4 hours per medium to large bundle of notes equivalent) N.B. This is dependent on the number of bundles of notes supplied for review and the above quote is based on one bundle but may increase if more bundles are provided. Typically around 60 pages per hour

  • Scoring psychometric questionnaires (where applicable), writing the report and recommendations, (typically between 4 and 7 hours)

I normally also request for a family member or close acquaintance to provide a witness account for the purposes of the assessment, separately, at the end of the interview if/when appropriate/applicable

I am typically able to see the client within 4-6 weeks of acceptance of these terms or referral and to submit the final report within 4 weeks of the date of completion of data collection (this typically being the interview date or later if additional information is required) – excluding any booked annual leave.
Payment terms: no later than 12 weeks from the date of invoice.

My estimate for a typical ADDENDUM report is between £680 and £1320.This is estimated as follows:

  • Interview with the client AND psychometrics administration (typically 1 – 1.5 hours)

  • Reviewing relevant medical/psychological records (between 0.5 and 2 hours,  dependent on the number of bundles of NEW notes supplied.

  • Scoring psychometric questionnaires  0.5 hours.
  • report and updated recommendations, (typically between 2 -4 hours)

I normally also request for a family member or close acquaintance to provide a witness account for the purposes of the assessment, separately, at the end of the interview if/when appropriate/applicable

I am typically able to see the client within 4-6 weeks of acceptance of these terms or referral and to submit the final report within 4 weeks of the date of completion of data collection (this typically being the interview date or later if additional information is required) – excluding any booked annual leave.
Payment terms: no later than 12 weeks from the date of invoice.

In addition, where home visits or out-of-base visits are needed, charges are estimated as follows (I can visit in any of the Channel Islands, UK and abroad):

  • Flights and transfer costs (to/from base)
  • Half my hourly fee (£85 per hour) for travel time (door-to-door and return – of course the assessment time itself is covered as above)
  • Additional subsistence costs, as appropriate (i.e. food/drink) in the region of £100 per day (if day return). Accommodation and additional subsistence if/where overnight stay is required.
  • I would normally ask for a refund of any expenses incurred should clients cancel at short notice or following travel bookings being made that are non-refundable. I would also charge £340 (2 x hours) with less than 24 hours’ notice of cancellation.
  • Non attendance charge of 2 hour confirmed appointment at £340.

A more specific estimate would be provided in advance for out-of-base assessments.   Finally, should I be required to give an opinion in Court at a future date in relation to my report, my fees would be as follows:

  • Cost of travel arrangement, subsistence and appropriate hotel accommodation (again as above)
  • 50% of the report fee for each (up to) morning or afternoon session in Court
  • 100% of the report fee for each (up to) full day in Court.

Typical Expert Work & Turnover of Opinion

Up to 10 reports per year currently, and since 2009. I keep these to around one per month in order to maintain my competences, skills and output in all my areas of expertise, including full time Government of Jersey Healthcare (37hrs p/w, including clinical, research, audit, line management, service development and governance duties) approximately an additional 15 hours p/w of clinical treatment for self-funders, health insurance funded psychological treatment and corporate teaching/training duties and adult dyslexia assessment.

I estimate approximately 80 / 20 plaintiff/defendant . I will have increased capacity as of March 2021 and, therefore, to accept a greater number of instructions.

We would be  happy to show a copy of an anonymized example psychological injury and chronic pain report to any prospective instructing party.
